The upper echelons of society used to be found at debutante balls<\/a> and charity<\/a> polo matches. Now, you need only venture to your local Waitrose<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And as summer<\/a> approaches, the supermarket is catering for the beau monde with a new summer range of 148 delightfully unnecessary but divine-sounding food offerings. <\/p>\n

Perhaps the most notable is its Tipple Toppers, for the wine you\u2019ll be sipping as you lounge on your John Lewis garden furniture. <\/p>\n

The packet contains pitted green and black olives, dry cured pork salami, Ib\u00e9rico\u00a0cheese, pickled gherkins and tomato and herb baked bruschetta, all designed to be balanced on top of a glass. <\/p>\n

God forbid you mistake it for bog standard antipasti<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2018Pour a chilled glass of your favourite wine and pop your mini grazing board on top,\u2019 the supermarket says. Plates are clearly not<\/em>\u00a0\u00e0 la mode anymore.<\/p>\n

It comes with an \u00a38 price tag, although there\u2019s an introductory offer of \u00a36.40.<\/p>\n

In the pudding aisle, you\u2019ll find Peach Melba Jelly for a humble \u00a34.95. The peach jelly with raspberries and peach pieces is a nod to the dessert invented back in 1892 by French chef Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel.<\/p>\n

Apparently a \u2018taste of sunshine in every spoonful\u2019, the dessert has an introductory offer price of \u00a33.70, and there\u2019s a Peach Melba Ice Cream available too.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re attending a rip-roaring summer bash with the upper crust, you\u2019ll want to avoid whipping out a bottle of Sprite for a mixer. God <\/em>no.<\/p>\n

Instead, pick yourself up a bottle of Waitrose Blood Orange & Pink Grapefruit Still Lemonade \u2013 if it\u2019s effervescent, you\u2019ll be turned away at the door (unless it\u2019s champagne).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also completely unacceptable to get a ham and cheese meal deal. Instead you should spend \u00a34.95 on the Waitrose No. 1 Mortadella & Ricotta Sandwich \u2013 we doubt we\u2019d be disappointed though.<\/p>\n

The supermarket<\/a> does do picky bits brilliantly, and there\u2019s no shortage of options to make the ultimate grazing board. From Raw Red Shrimp & Monkfish with Pil Pil Butter (\u00a310) to a Calabrian Charcuterie & Parmigiano Reggiano Platter (\u00a36) \u2013 you\u2019re sorted.<\/p>\n

Or why not opt for the No.1 Egyptian Monastery Olives and the Caramelised Onion Pork Cocktail Sausages?<\/p>\n

Yes, we\u2019re drooling too, but get your handkerchief, wipe it away and tell us which sumptuous offerings will you be putting in your basket.<\/p>\n

Waitrose shoppers\u2019 upper-middle-class tastes\u2026<\/h2>\n

While these offerings all sound amazing (and posh), the supermarket knows its shoppers.<\/p>\n

At the end of last year, Waitrose revealed its customers\u2019 favourite purchases by month, with bone broth (made trendy by Gwyneth Paltrow) and Pomegranate, Rose & Preserved Lemon Harissa sauce being popular buys.<\/p>\n

Sake, the ancient Japanese rice wine, was the most searched for item in May, while June saw pickle juice flying off the shelves.<\/p>\n

Bacchus wine, spotted dick and blackberry cobbler were also popular with the elite\u2019s taste buds.<\/p>\n

This, my friends, is how the other half live. <\/p>\n
