For years, McDonald\u2019s <\/a>fans in the UK have been begging the fast food chain <\/a>to bring one very specific menu item over from the US<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And these prayers have finally been answered, as the \u2018legendary\u2019 Shamrock Shake is finally making its UK debut.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the first time ever, the vivid green milkshake<\/a> is available here, but it\u2019s only going to be on sale for a limited time, so you\u2019ll have to be quick to give it a try.<\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s<\/a> is launching the drink from today (Wednesday, March 12) and it\u2019ll be on the menu for two weeks only until March 25 \u2013 and when it\u2019s gone, it\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n

What is the McDonald\u2019s Shamrock Shake?<\/h2>\n

The milkshake features a peppermint-flavoured syrup blended with a creamy vanilla base, and comes hot on the heels of the launch of the Grimace Milkshake<\/a>, which arrived in the UK in 2024.<\/p>\n

The purple milkshake went viral on TikTok, sparking a bizarre challenge and quickly sold-out after it was introduced,<\/a> but returned for a second time later in the year.<\/p>\n

It will cost \u00a33.09 for a large Shamrock Shake, \u00a32.69 for a medium and \u00a32.19 for a small one. <\/p>\n

And, as well as getting to try a cult item, those who purchase a Shamrock Shale in participating restaurants will also be donating to a good cause, as 20p from each sale will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK. <\/strong><\/p>\n

McDonald\u2019s is a founding and forever partner of the Charity, which provides free \u2018home away from home\u2019 accommodation to families with children in hospital.<\/p>\n

The sales from these drinks helped to build the very first Ronald McDonald House in 1974 in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t until 2012 that the drink was available nationwide across the USA for the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The milkshake proved so popular that in 2017, the fast food chain started experimenting with different varieties, launching a chocolate version.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to today, and 2025 marks the first time the Shamrock Shake will ever be available in the UK \u2013 it\u2019s come a long way in the last 58 years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat did Metro think of the Shamrock Shake?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<div class=\"factbox-content\">\n<p>When <strong>Metro <\/strong>staff tried the seasonal US favourite, it proved to be somewhat divisive:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a lover of mint, I was equal parts excited and dubious \u2013 mint flavouring can go so wrong and before you know it you\u2019re stuck with a treat that tastes more like toothpaste,\u2019 said partnerships and projects editor, Mel Evans.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018While the first sip of this shake was perhaps\u00a0<em>too\u00a0<\/em>minty, after a little stir, the flavour mellowed and the consistency was surprisingly creamy. Naturally, I smashed the shake in about two minutes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Lindsay, assistant lifestyle editor shared the enthusiasm, calling it the \u2018best McDonald\u2019s shake yet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Mint choc chip ice cream has always been my favourite, so I knew I was going to love this,\u2019 she added. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s almost like a palate cleanser, with a fresh, sweet flavour that offsets a salty portion of fries perfectly. I could also see this being even better layered with chocolate shake \u2013 and perhaps this would help win over the mint haters too.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>On the opposing side however, specialist food writer Courtney Pochin said: \u2018I\u2019m a firm believer that mint should be used in toothpaste and the odd salad, but never a dessert, and the Shamrock Shake hasn\u2019t changed my stance on this.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s such a cult item in the US that I knew I had to give it a go anyway, but it was a mistake on my part \u2013 the first sip had me visibly recoiling, as it was essentially like drinking frothy, foamy mouthwash.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The more you drink, the more you get used to the flavour, but if you stop and go back to it later, you\u2019ll be wincing all over again.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I know Maccies fans have been waiting for this one for years, but I don\u2019t get the hype.
